The PSU fans make most of the noise in the unit, so I decided to replace them with two Noctua NF-A4x20 FLX 40mm Case Fans. The problem, I found, was that the fans would not spin when the PSU was powered on, since the PSU only supplied 6v (instead of the 12v it was rated at).

Instead, I replaced the the fans on the back of the unit with the Noctua fans, and used those fans to replace the PSU fans. The wires need to be adjusted for the fans to work. Below is the correct pin layout.

The Noctuas also produce WAY less CFM than the stock fans. So please bare that in mind. I have an extra PSU in case this one burns out.

As far as temperatures go, I have a 5524 (non-POE/stock) unit, that runs at about the same temperature (about 50C). The only difference is that the unit is set to power up the fans at 50C and turn them off at 40C (So the unit will get up to 50, turn on the fans until it gets back to 40, and keep them off until the temps go back to 50.), and the 5548P never seems to get under 40 to turn off the fans. This means that the fans are constantly running (but quiet).

Yes, I should have taken WAY more pictures of the inside of the unit.

The PowerConnect 5548P is pretty loud, mainly due to the 600 watt PSU inside. Taking the switch apart, there are two fans on the back of the unit, and two fans inside the PSU.
